IODE Ocean Data Portal(ODP)

provides a “one-stop shop” approach to oceanographic data held by the IODE global network of 80 National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs), as well as to resources from other participating systems. The ODP provides infrastructure to integrate collections and inventories of marine data and allow for the directory, evaluation and access to data via web services to meet the needs of the whole ocean community. INTEROPERABILITY

Interoperability is the key to accessing data from the oceanographic community. To achieve interoperability the IODE ODP makes use of internationally endorsed standards (ISO, OGC).

DATA SHARING

The IODE ODP makes data and services available freely and without restriction in a timely and user-friendly way through a single entry point. The portal supports the data sharing principles of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO (IOC Oceanographic Data Exchange Policy)

CAPACITY

At present moment ODP is providing access to 100 ocean and meteo datasets from 10 NODC of US, Canada, EU, Russian Federation and Ukraine with over 1 000 000 observations, the system-to-system communication with WMO Information System (WIS), pan-European SeaDataNet and EuroGEOSS.
Training programme for establishing ODP nodes has been developed for further contributions to IODE Ocean Teacher Academy. Read more…
The Partnership Centre for the IODE Ocean Data Portal has been established at 2013 to develop, host and maintain the tools and specifications for the portal and its distributed marine data system operation. Read more…

BENEFITS

The IODE ODP provides multi-disciplinary access to ocean observations in real-time and delayed mode. Fewer resources will be spent on data discovery and access activities as data will be more visible and better accessible.
This will result in:

  • Reduced financial and time demands on users
  • Better products and services
  • Increased visibility for NODCs producing ocean observations, and related products and services
  • Improved conditions for ocean research and informed decision making
